A tennis ball is the default fetch toy and it is quietly a poor one. The felt covering acts like sandpaper on enamel, it carries grit into the mouth, and a determined chewer destroys it in minutes. Why disc fetch is a better workout
Chasing a ball is mostly straight-line running. A disc that curves, hovers and changes direction forces your dog to accelerate, brake, twist and jump — engaging core and hindquarter muscles that linear running largely skips. Ten minutes of disc work tires a high-energy dog noticeably more than twenty minutes of ball fetch, which is welcome news if you have a breed that never seems to stop.
Material makes or breaks it
Standard plastic discs shard into sharp edges. Look for a bite-resistant, flexible construction that dents and recovers rather than cracking. Throw it properly
Sidearm and low, not overhead and hard. Keep sessions short
Five to ten minutes, then stop while your dog still wants more. Overheated, adrenaline-fuelled dogs do not self-regulate, and repetitive jumping on hard surfaces accumulates wear. End on a win, put the disc away, and offer water.
