The bath itself is rarely the hard part. The hard part is the ninety seconds afterwards, when a wet dog sprints through the house and shakes once in every room. Towel-rubbing a large breed takes twenty minutes and usually ends with both of you soaked.

Wear the towel instead of chasing with it
A bathrobe flips the process. The dog wears a highly absorbent towel that keeps working while they walk around, sniff the kitchen and calm down on their own terms. Instead of holding a wet dog still, you put the robe on, fasten it, and let drying happen in the background. Most of the water ends up in the fabric rather than on your walls.
Why it suits big, double-coated dogs
A Golden Retriever's undercoat holds an astonishing amount of water, and a hand towel simply moves it around. A full-coverage robe presses absorbent material against the back, flanks and chest at once, which is where that dense coat holds most moisture. Drying time drops dramatically, and in cold months that matters for comfort as much as cleanliness.
Fewer mats, less damp smell
Dogs that air-dry on the sofa leave damp patches that smell by the next morning, and long hair left wet for hours mats at the roots. Getting most of the moisture out quickly reduces both problems, and it means less time with a hair dryer, which many dogs find frightening and loud.
Make it part of the routine
Put the robe on straight after the final rinse, before the dog has a chance to shake. Fasten it snugly but comfortably around the chest and neck, then let them move. Wash and dry the robe after each use so it is ready and fresh for next time. Keep one dedicated robe for the car and one for home.
